The Federal Government has inaugurated a 12-million cubic feet gas extraction plant and a 20-megawatt gas-to-power facility in Otakikpo, Ikuru, located in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. The project was delivered through the Otakikpo Joint Venture, comprising Green Energy International Limited as the operator and Lekoil Oil and Gas Investment Ltd as the technical partner of the Otakikpo field PML 11.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, commended the Federal Government’s strategic vision for Nigeria’s gas sector and praised the Otakikpo Joint Venture for delivering the project. He acknowledged Lekoil’s technical partnership in ensuring the successful completion of the project.
Ekpo highlighted that President Bola Tinubu’s mandate to expand Nigeria’s gas development aligns with the country’s position as Africa’s largest gas reserve holder. He described the establishment of First Otakikpo Midstream Limited (FOML) to manage the gas business as a significant step toward achieving Nigeria’s sustainable energy goals.
He further commended the JV’s investment in a 20MW gas-to-power plant, which will provide electricity to the Otakikpo field’s operations. The excess power generated will also support local industries through a proposed industrial park, promoting economic activities in the region.
Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe, Chairman of Green Energy International Limited, credited the project’s success to the combined efforts of all stakeholders, including Lekoil’s technical input. He emphasized that the project supports the World Bank’s Gas Flares Reduction Programme (GFRP) under the Small Scale Gas Utilisation Programme (SSGUP).
Adegbulugbe also highlighted the contributions of Nigerian professionals, particularly from the Niger Delta region, who played vital roles in the installation and operations of the plants.
In his remarks, Lekoil’s CEO, Mr. Olalekan Akinyanmi, described the achievement as a testament to collaboration and commitment to sustainable energy solutions. He reiterated Lekoil’s dedication to supporting initiatives that advance Nigeria’s energy landscape and economic growth.
